Guntersville defense led by Todd Morrow (73) Jeff Garrison (34) and Phil Beason (53) swarmed over the Wildcat offense throughout first half action Monday night to take a 18 0 lead at the intermission 'ville 21 18 The contest played at Trammell Stadium Monday evening was actually like two different games with the first half going to the visitors and the second stanza belonging to the Wildcats Earlier in the year Guntersville had downed the 21 0 and with the scoreboard reading 18 0 at halftime it appeared the second meeting might turn into a rout It to be however as the Wildcats came out and totally dominated the second halt Guntersville scored all its points on pass plays with the third TD coming eight seconds before intermission While the Gunters ville offense was controlling the ball and scoring points thedefense was shutting down Scottsboro liniitifig the Wildcats to 30 yards and recovering two fumbles Whatever Coaches Rupert Wright and Steve Johnson said at halftime must have gotten their players attention because the second half was a totally different ballgame The turnaround started with the opening kickoff when the Wildcats caused and recovered a fumble deep in Guntersville territory The first Scottsboro points came a few plays later when Mark Wooden (Walloovannfiold daubiand tripW roil pduga iMCMk sot mdabia la all Kona Ooa4ut nAtndudad) Dale Dupree (28) returns a kick for good yardage against the Guntersville during second half action Monday night The Wildcats came from behind to defeat the visitors 21 18 crashed through the line for a TD The PAT by Scott Kennedy was good and the scoreboard read 18 7 ollowing the next kickoff the Wildcat defense shut down the Guntersville running game and constant pressure on quarterback Brad Johnson halted the passing attack While the defense im proved over the first half the Wildcat offense led by Steve Harkness at tailback (122 yards and two touchdowns) really came alive first touchdown came on a 55 yard jaunt to paydirt with Chris Shrader and Brad Blume furnishing key blocks to break the runner into the secondary Again PAT was good and the Wildcats were within four points During most of the fourth quarter neither teams moved the ball consistently and it appeared time would expireon the Wildcats With less than two minutes remaining and the ball 46 yards from the end zone Wright called for a halfback pass It looked for a minute as though Harkness would be trapped and thrown for a loss while looking for his receiver Eluding a would be tackler at the line of scrimmage Harkness raced down the sideline then cut back through a number of Guntersville defenders and ran untouched into the end zone Shrader came through again with a terrific block near the goal line to clear the way for the score ollowing PAT the Wildcats finally had the lead at 21 18 Everyone knew that Gunters ville would go to the air after the kickoff but the Wildcat defense rose to the occasion and Bobby Rollins sealed the victory with a quarterback sack and a fumble recovery in Guntersville territory Intefcvmv I P1lt wall pain Aak about our extended payment plant MM4 The Bharmn WUliamd Co 4 Escambia County Tigers The Lions take a 4 5 record into the matchup at 1A Valley Head a team that is looking for a possible state championship With key players dropping like leaves in an autumn wind Section has been forced to go with a make shift lineup for much of the year a lineup that was missing as many as six starters at a time Injuries to all county fullback Danny Gist all county receiver Ronto armer and receiver Todd Anderson were blows the Lions struggled with and never quite overcame according to Coach Scott Blackmon had to adjust to Danny being out and then we lost the best receiver (armer) along with Vincent) Robinson in the county I believe we ever really adjusted Blackmon said Blackmon ever the optimist added think that if been healthy be 8 If the Lions were 8 1 Blackmon conceded the loss would have been to yffe An 8 1 record would also mean wins over Bridgeport Gaston twice and Pisgah all losses nonetheless really help what happened to the team this year Accent $99 Bq yd ng 1900 AD for three years because I coached there but mostly for our seniors want them to have a good time and go out with agood taste in their Injuries aside teams have had to struggle to beat the Lions Blackmon said that injuries and all we were ahead at halftime in seven And although the Lions lost 19 6 at Pisgah riday Blackmon said goton the busand told the thought you played which I think we did under the circ*mstances If our kids have any fight in them it would have been 40 Along with injuries one other thing has remained constant Rusty Brown Brown has been the main weapon offensively piling up 1069 yards in nine games to become the first Lion ever to break 1000 yards done that even in the last six games when people knew he was going to run the Blackmon said Brown will run one final time
