ATLANTA - Power outages are being reported across Georgia as Hurricane Helene continues its northward trek, with outages expected to

Helene made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane and is predicted to weaken, but remain a hurricane in southern and central Georgia before downgrading to a tropical storm as it moves through metro Atlanta.

Expected impacts in north Georgia include tropical storm force winds, heavy rains, lightning, and potential spin-up tornadoes; flash flood warnings are in place for several counties in metro Atlanta.

As of 11 p.m. Thursday, Georgia Power was reporting more than 20,000 customers impacted by Helene, with more than 500 active outages.

  • Frontline Response International at 2585 Gresham Road in Atlanta. This shelter is open 24 hours a day during the storm.
  • Center for Pan Asian Community Services Inc., 3510 Shallowford Road NE in Atlanta. This shelter opens on Thursday at 4 p.m.
  • New Life Community Alliance’s auditorium at 3592 Flat Shoals Road in Decatur. This shelter opens on Thursday at 5 p.m. and will remain open 24 hours a day during the storm.
  • Tucker First United Methodist Church’s activities center at 4315 Church Street in Tucker. This shelter opens on Thursday at 7 p.m. and has limited capacity.
